How PM Awas Yojana Works (Urban vs Rural)
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) aims to provide "Housing for All". The scheme operates differently based on your location:
PMAY-Urban (CLSS)
Under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) for Urban areas, the government provides an interest subsidy on home loans:
- EWS (Economically Weaker Section): Income up to βΉ3 Lakhs. Max subsidy approx βΉ2.67 Lakhs.
- LIG (Low Income Group): Income βΉ3L to βΉ6 Lakhs. Max subsidy approx βΉ2.67 Lakhs.
- MIG-I / MIG-II: For middle-income families earning up to βΉ18 Lakhs. (Subject to current scheme validity).
PMAY-Gramin (Rural)
For rural areas, the government provides a direct financial grant (usually βΉ1.2 Lakh in plains and βΉ1.3 Lakh in hilly areas) for house construction. This is targeted primarily at BPL, Antyodaya, and families listed in the SECC-2011 housing deprivation data.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
For Urban EWS and LIG categories, adult female ownership (sole or joint) is generally mandatory for purchasing a new house.
No. A key condition of PMAY (both Urban and Rural) is that the beneficiary family should not own a 'pucca' house in their name anywhere in India.
APL families are generally not the primary target for PMAY-G grants. However, if an APL family falls under specific deprivation criteria listed in the SECC-2011 survey, they might be considered.
